This month on the blog, I have been posting who we are and what we are promised as Christians, Christ followers, believers in Christ – whichever you would prefer to call it.
Earlier this week I read an article called 7 unbiblical things that many Christians believe. Six of the items were understandable, even a little comical, but number 3 really made me pause, especially since I have been doing the who we are in Christ series. I tend to believe that since God created us all, we are all His children. While we are all His creation, we are not all necessarily all His children. Let’s take a closer look at the third unbiblical thing on the list that many Christians believe.
3. We’re All God’s Children
Although God has created everyone, not everyone relationally belongs to Him. Only those who have repented of sin, placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and possess the Holy Spirit of God inside of them can claim Him as their Father:
“But you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:15-16).
“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ … If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:26-29, emphasis mine in both verses).
So those who are In Christ have:
repented of sin,
placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior,
and thus possess the Holy Spirit of God inside of themselves
and/or have been baptized into Christ (which signifies acceptance of salvation and a brand new life in Him)
