A.M. – Day 15 – What Child is This?

Today’s Reading: Isaiah 11:1-10

My memory of this song begins with a music channel that was popular in the early – mid 90’s called video music box.  At that time, you could call and request that they play a video (waaaay before you tube)  of course they would end up charging the request fee to your phone bill.  I’m sure it was an outrageous price.  Music was a sticky topic in our house, and watching this station was the way my sister and I got to listen to popular music…sneaking in plain sight? My father was at work, my mom was for an hour or two in the kitchen.  So we got to watch vmb and one day – this was the song that came on, and it was ultra confusing – it was a “secular” music channel, but this was not a secular song…but it sounded secular… horrifyingly (at the time) I liked it. And would hope that someone would request it, and if I saw it requested (#242) would stay glued until it played.  Mercy, that was so long ago.  I wish I would have actually listened to and understood this song.  Perhaps I would’ve seen that I could have turned to the person who this song was about.   It was not just religious words in a secular sounding song – Jesus is Real.  I didn’t know that then, the way I do now.  Thank God He doesn’t give up on us, and thank God that we grow up.  This is an ultra popular song with all different types of singers, from Country to Hip Hop.

1. What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

2. Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

3. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come peasant, king to own Him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Raise, raise a song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

 What Child Is This? is a Christmas carol whose lyrics were written by William Chatterton Dix, in 1865. At the time of composing the carol, Dix worked as an insurance company manager and had been struck by a severe illness. While recovering, he underwent a spiritual renewal that led him to write several hymns, including lyrics to this carol that was subsequently set to the tune of “Greensleeves”, a traditional English folk song. Although it was written in England, the carol is more popular in the United States than in its country of origin today
